A to Z: Character Creations; Ana

Ana

No daughter should fear her father this way. Panic causes her pulse to race. Carefully she pushes to the back of her clothes and curls up behind her Barbie Doll's Playhouse.

The whispers haunt her, "Ana, Ana, it is our special time. Where are you?"

Ana's entire body freezes as he approaches the closet. The door opens, the light hits the hem of her Winnie the Pooh nightgown, but to her relief; he is distracted by a voice calling for him. In that moment, Ana wants to stay right where she is forever alone and safe. The only alternative is to come out of the closet and face the consequences.

  1. Lordy, that is a sad character you have created. Wouldn't it be nice to say that this kind of character could never exist in the real world?

  2. Unfortunately this does happen all too often. Hope Ana will run from her abuser. One narrow escape at a time.

  3. I find it difficult to say "I like this" about the little bit of horror contained here but I will say it is compelling.

  4. Oh, magnificent! Not what is happening to poor Ana, but the construct of the piece itself. This is truly a wonderful yarn, leaving the reader worrying for Ana and her implied fate. The final line almost manages to toss doubt on the perceived notion of why she is hiding throughout the tale, yet still, the answer is clearly there. You've managed to describe something genuinely heinous without debasing the writing to do it.

Extremely effective, and very well done!

  6. Well, this is an intriguing idea for the Challenge -- character creations! It's a little bit of a character sketch and story start all in one.

Will "B" be a new character? Or will we find out more about Ana?
